Chinese Medicine for Weight Loss

If you’re struggling with your weight, energy and digestion, maybe the addition of Chinese Medicine is what you need.

When we discuss weight gain, more often that not the associated symptoms include; bloating and a heavy feeling with a lack of energy and motivation. This normally happens slowly over time and consumes the person, reducing the appetite and leading to inadequate sleep and irregular bowel habits.

From a Chinese Medicine perspective, we are describing disharmonies between the Liver and the Spleen/ Stomach organs. These include Liver Qi stagnation and Spleen and Stomach Qi deficiency leading to internal Damp accumulation.

These patterns combine an excess condition, which develops internally with an underlying deficiency. The dysfunction with the Qi mechanism of the Liver and Spleen affects the digestive system in different ways:

1, weakening the digestive process and preventing movement, and ability to efficiently break down food, resulting in a blockages of Damp and Phlegm.

2, The failure of Spleens role in fluid metabolism and distribution leading to bloating and distention,

3, the lack of qi movement to the intestines causes sluggish bowel movements,

4, The knock on effects the other organs, leading to further weight gain.

But how does our Spleen Qi become deficient?

A deficiency is created over time following an environment which includes stress and over thinking, plus a lifestyle of late, irregular, rushed meals, rich, sweet greasy foods, and more than average amount of dairy and alcohol.

This way of life slows down the ability of the Spleen and Stomach to digest the foods and produce Qi. Instead creating a sluggish digestion which will affect your bowel movements.

Deficient Spleen Qi ?

  • Eating cold, raw foods,

  • Alcohol,

  • Over thinking and worry,

  • Irregular meals,

  • Dairy, sugar, and oil rich diet,

  • Too much physical and mental work,

  • Not enough rest and relaxation.

How Can Acupuncture Assist Weight Loss?

Chinese Herbal Medicine and acupuncture, when used consistently, can strengthen the spleen and stomach organs, and clear damp accumulation through tonifying and draining methods, simultaneously. Allowing the organs to function at full potential.

Acupuncture is not a miracle treatment, it replies on your natural healing ability’s to kick in, and for this to happen changes to your environment, diet and lifestyle need to happen.

The food that we eat, either builds Qi and supports the body, or depletes Qi and creates ill health.

  1. Alcohol, sugar and processed foods need to be kept to a minimum.

  2. Evening routines need to be more relaxing , with less electronic stimulation and work and more reading, or meditation, with the intention to sleep earlier, ideally before 11pm.

  3. Meals need to be eaten regularly, and not too late in the evening. Having smaller meals more often, with the smallest meal in the evening will work the best.

  4. Eating slowly and mindfully, with out work interruptions or arguments.

  5. Having a positive relationship with your body and your food.
