Cold Uterus causing Infertility? TCM Theory.

Can acupuncture help with infertility?

There are many reasons why somebody may struggle to conceive. The chosen diet, the working and living environment and the homeostasis of the body will all play a part in creating either a welcoming or hostile place inside the body to conceive. Chinese medicine theory, which includes Acupuncture as a medicine, views the body from a different perspective to western medicine. This difference has the ability to seek out patterns of disease, that, when treated with acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, can successfully allow the body to heal and for pregnancy to become possible for the individuals.

How is TCM theory different to western medicine?

The internal organs connect energetically and physically via a network of meridians containing acupuncture points. This network of acupuncture points, when treated using acupuncture needles, allows the internal communication of the body to continue. The acupuncture needles tap in to the energy of the organs and release blockages, tonify, or drain excess Qi from different parts of the body, seemingly unrelated to the acupuncture points used. This assists in the functioning of the organs and allows a deeper understanding of the internal connections. For example, The Uterus organ, found in the female pelvis, is connected to the Heart organ internally via The Chong meridian. This central meridian then passes through the Stomach up the midline and terminates on the face. It therefore has a strong relationship with the menstrual cycle, blood and fertility. Any dysfunction which this central meridian will impact periods, pregnancy and lactation.

What is Cold in the Uterus?

The uterus is expressed as an Extraordinary Organ in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and is discussed, manly when it comes to treating signs of infertility or issues around menstruation. The presence of cold in the uterus is a common cause of infertility which can go untreated for many years. Manifesting due to cold invading the body physically or cold being created inside the body, due to diet, lifestyle and environment.

A common pattern of disease which affects women is ‘Cold in the Uterus’. This is a metabolic activity, involving the secretions and inactivity of the Uterus functions, which include failure to maintain the correct environment and temperature for nurturing a foetus.

this pattern of disease belongs to TCM theory and can be overlooked by western medicine professionals. this is why a combination of western and Chinese approach can give the best results.

Chinese Medicine to treat infertility

It is the function of the Kidney Yang Qi to warm and encourage the Yang of the entire body, including the Uterus. Sexual performance, fertility, puberty and menstruation all depend on the warmth from the Kidney Yang, if the Kidney Yang is deficient and Kidney fire declines excessively then this will result in infertility. This is not just a female related issue. Kidney Yang, in both men and woman, is a very important aspect involved in fertility treatment. Infertility plus leukorrhea in women is a strong indication of Kidney Yang Deficiency.

Liver blood has a close relationship with the Uterus. If there is deficient Liver blood then the Uterus will be empty and vulnerable to Cold entering. When Cold invades this creates Cold Blood, which then will lead to Blood Stasis. Thus Liver Blood deficiency/ Blood Stasis plus Cold in the Uterus often coexist.
